How To Install Truck Lettering

Guide To Installing Vehicle Lettering

When we started out this business, we started as a simple vinyl lettering shop. From there we have expanded into making commercial signage for storefronts as well as digital marketing. This is why we have decided to take our passion for vinyl graphics and wraps as well as vinyl lettering and give our DIY-loving customers, all the appropriate instructions they need to successfully install truck lettering themselves!

Just like any job, there are some pros and cons for installing your own vinyl lettering. On the positive side of things, choosing to install your own truck lettering or other vehicle graphics can be a fun experience. There is no better feeling than completing a job your self and getting to admire a job well done. Additionally, DIY installation is a cheaper option and it also means you wont have to be without your vehicle while professionals install your vinyl lettering.

However, not having the appropriate experience of installing your own lettering, you run the risk of making a mistake and installing it incorrectly. Fixing a mistake will take more time and money than having one of our installation professionals complete the installation. We strive to make sure you are not without your truck for very long. We achieve this by working with our customers schedule to provide quick yet precise lettering installations!

Making sure your graphics are installed correctly the first time makes it worth the time and money spent not installing DIY.

If you are confident that you want to install it yourself then be sure to see our video tutorials below! The steps to installing truck lettering are relatively simple, but needs to be done correctly to avoid mistakes. Follow along with the owner of Slicks Graphics, Craig Sanford, as he shows how to perfectly install any truck lettering!

Step 1.

Clean The Surface

When installing vinyl lettering on your vehicle, it’s important to make sure that the surface is clean before you start. Vinyl lettering will not adhere properly to a dirty surface, and it can also cause the lettering to bubble and peel over time. To clean the surface of your vehicle, use a mild soap and water solution and a soft cloth. You may also need to use a mild abrasive cleaner on particularly tough dirt or grime. Once you’ve cleaned the surface, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with clean water to remove any residual soap or cleaners. Allowing the surface to dry completely before you start working with the vinyl lettering will help ensure optimal results.

Step 2.

Tape It In Place

It is important to tape the letters in place before applying them. This helps to prevent the vinyl from sliding around or wrinkling as you apply it. Additionally, taping the vinyl in place allows you to easily remove and reposition the letters if necessary. Once the vinyl is taped down, you can then use a squeegee to apply pressure and smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles. Finally, be sure to remove the tape slowly and carefully once the vinyl is in place to avoid damaging it. Following these steps will help ensure a professional-looking finish that will last for years.

Step 3.

Peel & Cut Off Paper

When you first receive your vinyl lettering, you’ll notice that there’s a paper backing covering the adhesive. It’s important to peel this off before applying your lettering to any surface. The paper backing protects the adhesive from dirt and debris, and it also makes the lettering easier to handle. Once you’ve peeled back the paper backing, you’ll need to cut off the excess. This ensures that your lettering will have a clean, professional appearance.

Step 4.

Place Back on Surface Tightly

When you’re ready to apply your vinyl lettering, it’s important to make sure that the back is placed tightly against the surface. This will help to prevent air bubbles from forming and potentially damaging the lettering. In addition, the pressure created by the adhesive backing will help to ensure that the lettering is firmly affixed to the surface. Finally, tucking in the edges of the lettering will give it a clean, finished look.

Step 5.

Squeegee

Applying vinyl lettering is a relatively simple process, but there is one important step that is often overlooked-squeegeeing. Squeegeeing helps to remove any air bubbles that may be present under the vinyl, which can cause the lettering to lift or peel over time. In addition, it helps to ensure that the edges of the vinyl are properly sealed. Without squeegeeing, the lettering may not adhere correctly and could eventually start to peel away from the surface. So, next time you apply vinyl lettering, be sure to take the extra step of squeegeeing it into place. Your lettering will thank you for it!

Step 6.

Remove Masking Tape

When you’re installing vinyl lettering, it’s important to use masking tape to help hold the lettering in place. However, once the lettering is securely in place, it’s important to remove the masking tape. If you leave the masking tape on, it can cause the vinyl lettering to peel away from the surface over time. Additionally, the sticky adhesive on the masking tape can attract dirt and dust, making it difficult to keep your lettering clean. For these reasons, it’s best to remove the masking tape after your vinyl lettering is installed. With a little care, your vinyl lettering will stay securely in place for many years to come.
